![]() Are you one of those people who finds themselves staring at the clock at 3:00 am? Have you ever wondered why it is that you wake up at odd hours - often in the middle of the night? Many people comment that they find themselves trying to count sheep between 3:00 and 4:00 am. Despite it feeling like a nuisance and disruptive to our sleep, there is usually a very valid reason for it.
As always, the body uses different symptoms and signals, to gain our attention. For example, according to Chinese medicine, the human body has a very specific energy clock (as depicted in the diagram above). Often the reason why we wake up between 1:00 and 3:00 am is because this is the liver’s time to detoxify. Chances are there is some level of toxicity in your system – perhaps from a heavy meal, eaten too late in the evening (the best time to eat is between 5:00 and 7:00 pm) or alcohol and drug consumption. Or, maybe your diet has been lacking in proper nutrients recently – not enough fresh vegetables, good sources of fats and proteins to name a few. All of these could cause your liver to ‘cry out’ around that time and wake you out of your slumber. The body is a miraculous machine and utilizes very specific symptoms and signals to get our attention. What may seem to us a pain – quite literally – is the physical mechanism seeking to communicate with us some point of imbalance. Instead of ignoring it or trying to squelch the symptoms, why not try listening with a compassionate ear to what might be going on that would cause your body to wake you at such a godforsaken hour! I don’t know about you but I enjoy my sleep and I will do whatever it takes to make sure I get it. If it means re-examining my eating habits and lifestyle so that I feel better, I’m all for it! Something to ponder on … maybe try sleeping on it and see what you think! Reference: http://www.comfytummy.com/?s=human+body+energy+clock |
